“Kinky Boots” Leads Tony Award Nominations with 13 Nods

SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1367333754455iStockphoto/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — With a score by composer Cyndi Lauper and a drag queen as its lead, Kinky Boots topped the Tony Award nominations, which were announced Tuesday by Broadway actress Sutton Foster and Modern Family’s Jesse Tyler Ferguson.

Other Broadway productions to rack up nominations, include Matilda the Musical with 12 nods, and the revival of Pippin.  The story about the life of a fictitious young prince and his father Charlemagne received 10 nominations.  The original 1972 Broadway production scored 11 Tony nominations and won four.

Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella received nine nods, while Golden Boy, a story about a young Harlem man who turns to prizefighting to escape the ghetto, nabbed eight.

The Tony Awards is set to air live on CBS on Sunday, June 9, at 8 p.m. Eastern time.
