Hemera/Thinkstock(ANNAPOLIS, Md.) — The Maryland Senate Thursday night gave final approval to a sweeping gun control bill, becoming the first state in 18 years to pass fingerprint licensing to buy new handguns.

The legislation also bans assault weapons, including AR-15s, reduces magazine capacity from 20 rounds to 10 and places new limits on firearm purchases by the mentally ill.

Gov. Martin O’Malley will sign the bill into law in May.
