NBA Owners’ Committee Votes Against Kings Move to Seattle
Published at(NEW YORK) — It looks like the Kings will remain in Sacramento after all.
An NBA ownership committee unanimously voted against moving the Sacramento Kings to Seattle. A formal vote of all 30 NBA owners is scheduled for May 13, but according to sources the full body is expected to ratify the recommendation of the seven owners from the relocation committee.
It was just a few months ago that it seemed the Kings were destined to relocate to Seattle, but Sacramento mayor Kevin Johnson put together a strong counter-proposal that wound up winning over skeptical NBA owners.
Johnson took to Twitter after the committee’s recommendation was announced. “That’s what I’m talking about SACRAMENTO!!!!! WE DID IT!!!!!,” he wrote.
Sacramento has funding and government approval to build a new downtown arena to be open in 2015 or 2016.
