(UNIONDALE, N.Y.) — Dan Girardi scored with 1:49 left in overtime to give the New York Rangers a thrilling 1-0 win over the New York Islanders on Saturday night at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
Ranger goalie Henrik Lundqvist stopped 29 shots for his first shutout victory of the season.
Both Lundqvist and Evgeni Nabokov were lights-out in regulation in a game that seemed destined to end in a shootout. Girardi was finally able to flip a shot past Nabakov off a rush for the win.
“That was a long skate, but it was well worth it,” Lundqvist said. “They played hard. It was an exciting game to play in. It was fun, a lot of fun. Like a playoff game for sure.”
The win kept the Rangers (21-16-4, 46 pts) eighth in the Eastern Conference standings. The Islanders (21-16-5, 47 pts) remain one point ahead. The ninth-place Winnipeg Jets are two points behind the Rangers with seven games remaining.
