Red Sox Win In Emotional Return To Fenway
Published at(BOSTON) — On the day they honored the victims and survivors of the Boston Marathon bombings, the Red Sox rallied late to defeat the Kansas City Royals 4-3.
Daniel Nava belted a three-run home run in the eighth inning for the Red Sox (12-4) who are off to their best start in 11 years.
Slugger David Ortiz was in the lineup for the first time this season after missing time with a right Achilles injury.
“I think today was different because we haven’t been through what we’ve been through this past week,” Ortiz said. “Driving around and looking around at people’s faces, it was a very emotional day here just looking at those guys that were injured by those bombs going off and watching the news nearly every day, it was painful, very painful. Today I could see people opening their chest and letting it go.”
Clay Buchholz (4-0) allowed eight hits and struck out six in eight innings of work. Andrew Bailey closed the game out for his third save.
The Red Sox wore white home jerseys with “Boston” on the front instead of the customary “Red Sox.” The shirts will be auctioned off for a fund to support victims of the bombings.
