“Richard Pitino has been selected as the finalist for the position of University of Minnesota men’s head basketball coach,” the school said in statement. “Pitino and the university have a reached an understanding in principle on the key terms of an agreement.”

“The terms of the agreement will be finalized later this week,” the statement continued. “Details of the agreement and further information regarding a scheduled press conference will be forthcoming.”

Pitino, the son of Louisville head coach Rick Pitino, coached last season at Florida International University. He led the team to an 18-14 record, and a berth in the Sun Belt conference championship game. A staple of his team was creating turnovers, as the Golden Panthers were fifth in the nation in turnover percentage.

Pitino takes over for Tubby Smith, who was fired after serving as the Golden Gophers coach for six seasons.
