Search for Survivors of Bangladesh Building Collapse Called Off
Published at(ISLAMABAD) — After five days of frantic searching — and several miraculous rescues — police in Bangladesh’s capital have called off the search for survivors at the site of a massive building collapse.
The decision comes as a fire broke out underneath the rubble overnight.
At least 380 people have been confirmed dead since the building, which housed garment factories, collapsed on April 24. Hundreds more remain missing.
Over the weekend, an elite commando unit captured the building’s fugitive owner as he tried to cross the border into neighboring India.
The building was only designed for five floors, but the owner illegally added three more. And when he found out the building wasn’t safe, he told workers to go back inside anyways.
