The news came Thursday following the announcement of the merger of the Nusra Front, one of the insurgent groups fighting in Syria, with the top al Qaeda organization in Iraq.

Damascus wants the U.N. to classify the Nusra Front as now being officially linked with al Qaeda, a contention made stronger by its leader’s stated allegiance to terrorist head Ayman al-Zawahiri.

If the Security Council follows through on the request, the Nusra Front’s faces both frozen financial assets and travel bans.

Syria’s foreign ministry is also likely taking this action in order to more closely link the Nusra Front with the chief rebel groups, such as the Free Syrian Army, which maintains it does not support the ideology of the Nusra Front.
