According to Venezuelan officials, Maduro, Hugo Chavez’s handpicked successor, won the election with just 300,000 votes more than Capriles. But the opposition candidate and his supporters are demanding a full recount of votes.

The opposition organized a protest on Wednesday, but was forced to cancel it after President Maduro accused Capriles of trying to stage a coup, and said he would “not allow” any protest to go into downtown Caracas.
