US Stocks Recovering from Last Week’s Losses
Published at | Updated at(NEW YORK) — The U.S. stock markets saw modest gains Monday, led mostly by energy companies as oil prices inched back up after last week’s plunge. Crude oil closed the day just under $89 a barrel.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 19.66 points, or 0.1 percent, closing Monday trading at 14,567.17. The S&P 500 added seven points, or 0.5 percent, to close at 1,562.50. The Nasdaq Composite rose 27.50 points, or 0.9 percent, closing at 3,233.55.
Apple Inc. and Exxon are among the nearly one-third of companies in the S&P 500 that will report first-quarter earnings this week. Apple stock bounced back Monday from a 9.1-percent decline last week.
Gold was up nearly $26 to close at $1,421 an ounce.
