Delaware Becomes 11th State to Permit Gay Marriage
Published at(DOVER, Del.) — Another victory for those working to expand marital rights for same-sex couples: Delaware Tuesday became the 11th state to pass legislation legalizing gay marriage.
The bill passed the Delaware State Senate 12 to 9, and was signed just minutes after the vote by Gov. Jack Markell, the New York Times reports.
“It’s a great day in Delaware,” Markell said Tuesday afternoon to a crowd of activists, according to the Times. “I’m signing this bill now because I do not intend to make any of you wait one moment longer.”
Same-sex couples will be eligible for Delaware marriage licenses on July 1.
