(NEW RIVER, Ariz.) — A mid-air collision north of Phoenix on Friday sent two small planes plummeting to the desert below, killing four people.
The collision happened around 10 a.m. local time, authorities said.
“Both of them collided. We don’t know how or why,” Phoenix Fire Department spokesman Larry Nunez said, according to ABC News affiliate KNXV. “The skies are clear.”
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been called to investigate, KNXV reports.
The identities of those killed were not immediately made available.
