Earlier this week, Berlusconi lost his first appeal of a guilty verdict for tax fraud. Now prosecutors have called for him to face another trial for bribing a senator from a rival political party to join his center-right coalition. The defection led to the collapse of the center-left government in 2008, setting off elections that helped to return Berlusconi to power, BBC News reports.

Sergio De Gregorio, once a left-wing senator from Naples, admitted he took payment from Berlusconi to make the political switch, Forbes magazine reports. Gregorio now also faces charges in the scandal.

According to BBC News, the 76-year-old former prime minister argues he is merely a victim of a campaign by a left-wing judiciary.

Berlusconi is also involved in a third trial for paying for sex with an underage girl in the infamous bunga bunga parties.
