Jennifer Lopez Says New Series “The Fosters” Is Like Her Own Family

Photo by Steven Lawton/FilmMagic(LOS ANGELES) — Jennifer Lopez is an actress, singer and dancer, but now she’s putting on her executive producer hat for a new ABC Family series called The Fosters.
Speaking about the show on Wednesday’s Good Morning America, Lopez said, “This is definitely a non-traditional sort of family. This really has base themes that are important, which is family equals love, a place where you are accepted, completely, loved unconditionally, protected.”
The Fosters, starring Teri Polo and Sherri Saum as the multi-ethnic moms, features one biological child, an adopted set of twins and a teenager the couple takes in as a foster child. For 43-year-old Lopez, who raises 5-year-old twins Emme and Max with ex-husband Marc Anthony, Lopez admits the series reflects her own family in many ways.
“Yes, me being a single mom, their dad doesn’t live at home with them. They have three step-brothers from two other moms. You know what I mean? That’s not traditional,” she explained.
Lopez split from Anthony, her third husband, in July 2011, when Max and Emme were three. She’s now dating her backup dancer and choreographer, Casper Smart, who, at 25, is 18 years her junior. The couple is often sighted together with Max and Emme, but when it comes to tying the knot, Lopez said that won’t happen “anytime soon.”
“Listen, there is no perfect what family is supposed to be. It’s about love,” Lopez said on GMA. “And that’s what I constantly remind myself of because I kind of let society kind of get in my head as well, ‘Oh, it shouldn’t be like this. I failed. I did this, I did that.’ And it’s like, no. [The kids are] happy, they’re healthy, they’re loved more than anything in the world and they’re going to be fine. I want them to know that.”
So, can we expect Lopez to step out from behind the camera and appear on The Fosters? “I don’t know. I feel the show stands on its own,” she says of a potential guest spot. “Of course, I’ll do whatever I can to make sure people know it’s out there and they watch it, but is a cameo the perfect way to do that? Maybe, maybe not. I don’t know. Whatever happens, I’m up for.”
The Fosters premieres on ABC Family on June 3 at 9 p.m. Eastern time.
