David Wright and Lucas Duda hit RBI singles off of Rivera in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Mets rallied for a 2-1 victory over their crosstown rivals.

“I think we surprised ourselves,” Wright said, “because when you get Mo coming in, it’s usually game over.”

The Mets honored Rivera, who is pitching in his final MLB season, by letting him throw out the ceremonial first pitch.  He came into the game looking for his 19th save of the season.  It was the first time in his 19-year career that Rivera entered with a save opportunity and failed to get an out.

“Hopefully, it’s the last one,” Rivera said.

Both Matt Harvey and Hiroki Kuroda pitched well for their respective teams.  The Yankees took a 1-0 lead on a Lyle Overbay RBI single in the sixth inning and then handed the ball off to Rivera, who blew the first save of his farewell season.

The teams head to Yankee Stadium for games Wednesday and Thursday night with the Mets having won the first two games of the series.
