(WASHINGTON) — First lady Michelle Obama had some kind words for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who recently underwent gastric banding surgery to shed unwanted fat.
The Republican had the procedure done in secret three months ago and has lost 30 pounds. While calling it a personal matter, Christie argued that he was doing it for his wife and children and not because of a possible run for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination.
Asked about the governor’s surgery on Wednesday, Mrs. Obama agreed with Christie that it was a “personal matter” and she won’t “comment on people’s personal choices.”
However, she did mention that the governor was “terrific” while describing his family as “wonderful.”
The first lady has been a longtime advocate of getting people to fight the battle of bulge while encouraging better eating habits.
