NASCAR’s Matt Kenseth Wins At Darlington
Published at(DARLINGTON, S.C.) — With 13 laps to go in the Southern 500 Saturday night, Matt Kenseth passed Joe Gibbs Racing teammate and race leader Kyle Busch to grab the checkered flag at Darlington.
“Man, it’s right up there. I don’t know that I’ve had a win that feels bigger than this at this moment,” Kenseth said after the race. “This is obviously a really historic racetrack, the Southern 500 is one of the most storied and historic races anywhere, not just in NASCAR. It’s pretty cool to be able to stand in victory lane at this place, same spot where all the other great drivers stood.”
Busch led 265 of 367 laps in the race, but a late tire problem, gave Kenseth the opening to win his third race of the season. Busch would finish in sixth.
Denny Hamlin, driving the entire race for the first time since suffering a fractured vertebra in his lower back due to an accident in late March, finished in second. Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Kevin Harvick rounded out the top five.
