The 49-year-old Hermann was previously the senior associate athletic director at Louisville. She becomes the third female athletic director at a BCS school following Debbie Yow of North Carolina State and Sandy Barbour of Cal.

Hermann will take over for former athletic director Tim Pernetti, who stepped down following the firing of men’s head basketball coach Mike Rice for abusing his players.

“It is a new day,” Hermann said of the scandal. “It’s already fixed and there is no one that doesn’t agree about how we treat young people with respect, dignity and build trust.”

Rutgers is scheduled to move from the American Athletic Conference to the Big Ten on July 1, 2014.
