The movie, of course, is based on the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald about the lives of the rich in the 1920s. DiCaprio plays the millionaire, Jay Gatsby.  Maguire plays Nick Carraway, a Midwesterner who finds himself hobnobbing with the rich. Carey Mulligan portrays Gatsby’s long lost love, Daisy Buchanan.

The stars were dressed in ornate 1920s-inspired attire as they arrived at the premiere at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall.  The movie’s screenwriter, Craig Pearce, told ABC News Radio The Great Gatsby “is undoubtedly a great story and a great novel,” and everyone involved in the production knew it would make a great film. “All you can do is follow that hunch, that belief inside of you,” Pearce added.

This isn’t the first time The Great Gatsby has been made into a movie. Robert Redford played Jay Gatsby opposite Mia Farrow’s Daisy in a 1974 version.

Various Manhattan socialites and celebs also joined the cast for Wednesday’s Gatsby premiere, including executive producer and rapper Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, who also executive produced the film’s soundtrack.

The Great Gatsby, which will also screen in 3D, opens nationwide May 10.
