(PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla.) — Tiger Woods finished his last two holes for par to close with a 2-under 70 and win The Players Championship on Sunday.
Woods and Sergio Garcia were tied headed into the last two holes, but Garcia finished with a quadruple-bogey 7 on 17 to give Woods some breathing room.
“It was a tough battle,” said Woods, who captured his first Players Championship since 2001. “The golf course played tricky today. It was fast and difficult, I hit it so good today, it was fun.”
With the win, Woods earned $1.71 million and now has a season total of over $5.8 million in just seven tournaments.
“I know a lot of people in this room thought I was done, but I’m not,” Woods said about his critics writing him off early in the year.
Garcia finished tied for eighth.
“That hole has been good to me for the most part,” Garcia said. “Today, it wasn’t. That’s the way it is. That’s the kind of hole it is. You’ve got to love it for what it is.”
Kevin Streelman, Jeff Maggert, and David Lingermerth all went 11-under and finished tied for second.
