Verlander — who hadn’t pitched more than five innings in his previous three starts — allowed seven hits, three runs, and two walks while throwing 110 pitches.

Shortstop Jhonny Peralta was 4-for-4 from the plate and knocked in three runs in the win.

Jose Valverde pitched a scoreless ninth, striking out Andrew McCutchen to end the game. Valverde has now saved six of his seven save chances since rejoining the team.

The Pirates (31-20) and Tigers (29-20) will square off again Tuesday. The Tigers will send Rick Porcello (2-2) to the mound to oppose Jeanmar Gomez (2-0).
