“John has coached championship teams and is passionate about winning,” Canucks general manager Mike Gillis said in a statement. “He has a proven ability to bring the best out of his players and we believe he has all of the qualities to bring our team success.”

Tortorella was fired by the Rangers after losing to the Bruins in five games in the playoffs.  New York would then hire former Canucks coach Alain Vigneault, who was fired by the team in May.

Tortorella was unable to fulfill the ultimate goal in New York of a Stanley Cup during his five seasons, but did lead the team to the playoffs three times.

Before coming to New York, he led the Tampa Bay Lightning to a Stanley Cup championship in 2004.
