Chrysler Refuses Government Request to Recall 2.7 Million Vehicles

Justin Sullivan/Getty Images(WASHINGTON) — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is calling on Chrysler Group LLC to recall approximately 2.7 million Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Liberty model cars after reports of numerous fuel tank fires in rear-end collisions.
But Chrysler is refusing the government’s request.
“Chrysler Group has been working and sharing data with the Agency on this issue since September 2010,” the company said in a statement to ABC News. “The company does not agree with NHTSA’s conclusions and does not intend to recall the vehicles cited in the investigation. The subject vehicles are safe and are not defective.”
“We believe NHTSA’s initial conclusions are based on an incomplete analysis of the underlying data, and we are committed to continue working with the Agency to resolve this disagreement,” Chrysler’s statement continued.
The recall would affect Grand Cherokees built between 1993 and 2004, and Jeep Liberty model years 2002 to 2007.
