(WASHINGTON) — Former Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her astronaut husband, Mark Kelly, will hit the road next week to bring attention to their push for expanded background checks for gun purchasers — a proposal that failed in the Senate in April.
Giffords and Kelly, founders of the super PAC, Americans for Responsible Solutions, are about to embark on a seven-day, cross-country tour that will kick off the in Nevada on Monday and include stops in Alaska, Maine, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota and Ohio.
Giffords was shot in the head at an outdoor event in Tucson, Ariz., in January 2011. Six people were killed in the attack.
