Iraq’s Brief Respite from Violence Ends
Published at(BAGHDAD) — After a brief lull, violence has again returned to Iraq with at least 55 people killed Monday in what is believed to be a continuation of revived sectarian warfare.
At least half of the fatalities occurred in the Sunni-dominated northern city of Mosul. According to local authorities, there were four car bomb explosions that left 28 people dead and 80 wounded in the western part of the city.
The unknown assailants appeared to direct their attacks on army and police units.
Meanwhile, a town in the central Iraqi province of Diyala was rocked by a coordinated series of bombings that killed 22 civilians and left dozens injured at two separate markets.
There was no claim of responsibility for any of the attacks Monday, although suspicion fell on Sunni insurgents determined to agitate simmering tensions between Shiites and Sunnis.
Last month was the deadliest in Iraq since 2008, with 1,045 reported fatalities.
