Throughout the season, Jon Hamm’s character, advertising exec Don Draper, has carried on an affair that was recently discovered by his daughter. And there has been much tension at his work, after his agency merged with a competitor to form what is now known as Sterling Cooper & Partners.

Weiner says of the season finale, which he wrote and directed, “I don’t believe in cliffhangers. I am burning out the entire story. I have painted myself into a corner. The writers have assured me that we’ll be okay and we’ll think of something else….I think the finale is very eventful and is the climax of the season.”

Weiner is serious when he suggests that he hasn’t thought of any ideas for the seventh and final season of the Emmy-winning drama. He says, “I have an image for the very ending of the series, and other than that, I won’t start, I’ll take six or seven weeks off and try and clear out the cobwebs, and this is going to be a big one. This is the homestretch….I want it to be good.”

Mad Men airs Sunday at 10 p.m. Eastern time.
