The story follows Superman — a.k.a. Kal-El — as he’s sent by his birth parents from the planet Krypton to Earth, where he’s adopted and given the name Clark Kent.  He later becomes a journalist, meets Lois Lane, and assumes the role of Superman as he faces off against the villain General Zod.

Michael Shannon co-stars as General Zod, and Amy Adams plays Lois Lane.  The cast also includes Diane Lane, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, Christopher Meloni and Laurence Fishburne.

Man of Steel was helmed by Watchmen director Zack Snyder, with a screenplay from David Goyer, who previously worked on The Dark Knight trilogy.  The film is screening in 3D and in IMAX theaters, and is rated PG-13.  [Click here to read a review]

Man of Steel is one of two new movies in theaters this weekend.  The comedy This Is the End opened on Wednesday, earning $7.8 million in its first day of release, according to Deadline.com.

If you plan to be in New York or Los Angeles this weekend, you’ll also be able to check out Sofia Coppola’s film The Bling Ring.  It’s based on the so-called “Bling Ring,” which stole more than $3 million worth of goods from the Los Angeles-area homes of Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and other celebrities in 2008 and 2009.  Emma Watson stars in the film, which is rated R.

The Bling Ring expands nationwide next week.
