(SPARTA, Ky.) — Matt Kenseth’s gamble on Sunday paid off. Kenseth held off Jimmie Johnson to take home the checkered flag at Kentucky Motor Speedway.
Kenseth decided not to put on new tires on the No. 20 Toyota on the final pit-stop and the move paid off. Johnson slipped from second to ninth and Kenseth won his fourth race of the season.
Jamie McMurray finished in second, followed by Clint Bowyer in third. Joey Logano took home fourth and Kyle Busch rounded out the top-five.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. won the pole headed into the race, but finished in 12th.
Despite a ninth place finish, Johnson still leads Carl Edwards, who finished in 21st, by 38 points in the Sprint Cup standings.
The Series heads to Daytona International Speedway on July 6.
