Rodriguez/Getty Images(LONDON) — In a headline-grabbing moment during an interview with the British newspaper The Guardian, Oscar winner Michael Douglas says his near-fatal bout with throat cancer was caused by oral sex.

When asked if he regretted years of smoking for its link to cancer, the Behind the Candelabra star told the paper, “No. Because without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV [human papillomavirus], which actually comes about from [oral sex] … it’s a sexually transmitted disease that causes cancer,” said the actor.

Douglas, 68, also told the paper how the cancer that was diagnosed in 2010 had been missed by other doctors he’d seen, and that it only took a tongue depressor for a friend’s doctor in Montreal to find the, “walnut-size tumour at the base of my tongue.”

Douglas recalled, “I will always remember the look on his face. He said: ‘We need a biopsy.'”

The Wall Street star is currently in remission.
