“The doctors are doing everything possible to ensure his well being and comfort,” Zuma said.

Over the weekend, Mandela’s health took a turn for the worse and his condition became critical.  The 94-year-old Nobel Peace prize winner had been listed in “serious but stable condition” since he was admitted to the hospital on June 8 for a recurring lung infection.

News of Mandela’s worsening condition came after a week in which there were several statements that his health was improving.

Most recently, former South African President Thabo Mbeki suggested last Thursday that Mandela was getting better.

“Nelson Mandela is in fact improving in terms of his health,” Mbeki told a South African radio station.

“I don’t think anybody should kind of entertain some wrong notion that Nelson Mandela is about to die tomorrow.  He’s not going to,” he added.
