Obama Administration Stops Fight to Limit Sale of Morning-After Pill

SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1370919444068Justin Sullivan/Getty Images(WASHINGTON) — The Obama administration has decided to drop its appeal of a federal judge’s ruling blocking limits on the sale of the so-called “morning-after pill” to underage girls. The decision sets the stage to allow the immediate sale of the contraceptive morning-after pill over the counter to girls of any age.  

Despite a late policy decision to allow sales of Plan B One-Step to girls 15 and older, a federal judge ruled in April that age limits are “politically motivated.” The government had hoped an appeals court would keep the ban on sales to younger teens in place while the case moved forward, but that request was turned down late last week.  

Now the Justice Department says it will reverse course, comply with the judge’s ruling and drop its appeal, widening the availability of the drug.
