The president’s agenda is clear-cut: he seeks to improve investment opportunities for U.S. businesses as the economic climate improves on the continent while also addressing local concerns for Africans regarding food, health, security and democracy.

If possible, Obama would like to meet with former South African President Nelson Mandela, who remains in critical condition and is reportedly on life support in a Pretoria hospital.  That decision will be left entirely up to Mandela’s family members.

In something of an unusual occurrence, Obama’s predecessor, former President George W. Bush, will be in Zambia next week to work with the U.S. Global Health Initiative.

While the two men won’t be meeting, their wives, first lady Michelle Obama and Laura Bush, are planning to attend the African First Ladies Summit in Tanzania on July 2.
