Parents Reminded to Inquire About Guns on National Ask Day

SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1371813517971David De Lossy/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — Friday is National Ask Day.  It’s a day the Center to Prevent Youth Violence and the American Academy of Pediatrics want parents to be reminded to ask if there are any guns in the homes where their children play.

“Talking to your kids about guns is not enough,” says Jennie Lintz with the Center to Prevent Youth Violence.  “Kids are curious.  You think guns are hidden…they generally know where they are and studies have shown over and over again that telling kids not to touch guns does not work.”

She says parents shouldn’t worry about asking.

“Almost every poll we’ve ever done in the 10 years that we’ve been working on this campaign, over 95 percent of parents — including parents who choose to own guns — say they would not be uncomfortable if asked the question,” Lintz says.
