(BOSTON) — The Boston Red Sox have sent struggling third baseman Will Middlebrooks to Triple-A Pawtucket, the team announced Tuesday.
The 24-year-old Middlebrooks has struggled mightily at the plate this season. His .192 batting average ranks 112th out of 113 AL players with at least 200 plate appearances this season.
The Red Sox called up infielder Brandon Snyder to replace Middlebrooks on the roster, but Jose Iglesias will become the every-day third baseman.
“Am I disappointed in myself? Absolutely, because that’s what I can control,” Middlebrooks said last weekend. “I can control how hard I work and what I do to perform. That’s something I have to change up in myself.”
The 23-year-old Iglesias is hitting .426 in 33 games this season.
