Quoting an Iraqi newspaper, the Post says the Islamic militant group’s chief, Hassan Nasrallah, made a clandestine trip to Tehran recently to appeal directly to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

According to the report, Nasrallah requested both military and financial assistance from Iran while asking how long Hezbollah fighters would be needed in Syria.

Khamenei allegedly told Nasrallah that his fighters would remain in Syria for as long as it took to achieve victory for President Bashar al-Assad.

Thousands of Hezbollah forces have been deployed in Syria to join in the fight against rebels who occupy large sections of the country, particularly in the north and east.

The Post also reported that Khamenei told Nasrallah of a contingency plan that includes sending full units of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard to a Syrian base that is in the process of being built.
