(PARIS) — Serena Williams defeated Maria Sharapova in dominant fashion on Saturday in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 to capture the French Open title.
Williams, 31, was the last American to win the singles title back in 2002. The win marks the 16th Grand Slam for Williams.
“I didn’t put any pressure on myself,” said Williams, who lost in the first round at the French Open last year. “I think losing in the first round definitely helped me realize I have nothing to lose, I can just kind of relax and just do what I want to do here.”
The top-seeded Williams became the oldest woman to win a major crown since Martina Navratilova won Wimbledon 23 years ago at the age of 33.
