Summer’s Priciest Vacation Destinations

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- Wondering how much your neighbors are paying for that family vacation to Hawaii this summer? How about your colleague who’s headed to New York City? TripAdvisor has the (approximate) answer, and along with it has also identified the priciest destinations in the U.S. for summer vacation.

Turns out New York City, despite being most frequently named the most expensive destination for travelers most of the year has been edged out this summer — barely — by another pricey place: Honolulu. The popular city on the island of Oahu is the most expensive summer travel destination for summer 2013, according to the TripIndex.

TripIndex prices out the following items in each destination to represent the cost of a night out for two people. Prices are per night and based on two people traveling together.

  • one night’s accommodation in a four-star hotel
  • cocktails for two people
  • dinner for two (two courses and a bottle of house wine)
  • round-trip taxi transportation (two taxi journeys of two miles each)

Cost reflects summer rates (June 1 — Aug. 31, 2013).
