Dating back to last season, Lincecum has struggled to resemble the dominant pitcher he showed earlier in his career. But there could be a solution to his troubles, become a reliever.

“Out of the bullpen, your focus is different,” Lincecum told CSN Bay Area’s Andrew Baggarly. “You’re not thinking about lasting. It’s ‘Go until they tell you to stop.’ When you’re starting, when you see your pitch count go up in a bad inning, that can be at the forefront of your brain. You know it’s going to (limit how deep you can go). So I guess you could say it’s a lack of pressing, when you’re relieving.”

In his last 44 starts, Lincecum has a record of just 13-20 and has an ERA over 5.00 during that time as well. During the team’s run to a World Series championship last season, Lincecum pitched 13 innings out of the bullpen and gave up just one run.

Lincecum is a free agent at the end of the season.
