(DOVER, Del.) — Tony Stewart cruised into victory lane for the first time this season after coming back to beat Juan Pablo Montoya on Sunday at Dover International Speedway.
Stewart snapped a 30-race winless streak and picked up his first win at the Monster Mile since 2000. Stewart sat in third late in the race, but had a great pit strategy that let him get back in the race.
“It’s proof that no matter how bad it’s been this year, none of these guys have quit and given up,” Stewart said after the race. “Just really proud of the effort this weekend.”
Montoya wound up in second and Jeff Gordon finished in third.
“Fun day there at the end,” Gordon said. “We were struggling and fighting hard all day, but came out with a good finish.”
Jimmie Johnson jumped a restart and had to serve a pass-through penalty and stayed on the track before going to pit-road, but still leads the Sprint Cup points standings.
