(WASHINGTON, DC) – The U.S. Department of Interior is helping Indian tribes buy back land parcels that have accumulated multiple owners. Officials say allotting reservation land to individual tribal members was once considered a way to assimilate American Indians into mainstream society. However, much of that land has now passed on to heirs who are fighting with each other over proper management. The program will start in Pine Ridge, South Dakota and will likely begin in Idaho by the end of the year.
