(LOS ANGELES) — Universal execs apparently think they have an Oscar contender in the studio’s upcoming Afghanistan war drama, Lone Survivor.
Deadline reports the film will be released Dec. 27 in New York and Los Angeles to qualify it for the next Academy Awards.
Based on the memoir of the same name, Lone Survivor stars Mark Wahlberg, Eric Bana and Taylor Kitsch, among others, as Navy SEALs behind enemy lines who made a deadly decision to spare a group of civilians — who ended up revealing the troops’ position to the Taliban.
All but one SEAL, Marcus Lutrell, played by Wahlberg, survived an ensuing firefight.
