US Markets Close Lower
Published at | Updated at(NEW YORK) — It’s more proof that we live in a truly global economy. Stocks here tanked on Tuesday after the markets in Europe and Asia suffered big losses.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 117 points, or 0.76 percent, at 15,122. The blue chips index had started the trading day down about 153 points before recovering those losses by the afternoon, then dropping again.
The Nasdaq Composite gave up 37 points, or 1.06 percent, to close the day at 3,437. The S&P 500 lost 17 points, or 1.02 percent, to finish the session at 1,626.
Hiring is up and more Americans are quitting their jobs, a sign that more people are growing their confidence about the job market. The Labor Department says that the number of people who quit their jobs in April jumped 7.2 percent to 225 million. Employers filled more than 4 million jobs in April, a five-percent increase from March.
