Weekend Box Office: “Monsters University” Top of the Class Again
Published at(NEW YORK) — Pixar’s Monsters University took the top spot at the box office this weekend despite facing a challenge from two newcomers, The Heat and White House Down.
Monsters brought in $46 million during its second weekend, but the real story was perhaps the surprise success of The Heat. The film, which stars Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, is a buddy cop movie with two female leads, a rare and typically underperforming genre. It doubled its expected $20 million debut to make $40 million over the weekend. Who says women aren’t funny?
White House Down opened as expected in fourth, and World War Z fell 55 percent to place third. Man of Steel rounded out the top five, as this week the Superman movie surpassed the $500 million mark worldwide.
Here are the top 5 movies from Friday through Sunday, with estimated ticket sales, according to Hollywood.com:
1. Monsters University $46.18M
2. The Heat $40.0M
3. World War Z $29.8M
4. White House Down $25.7M
5. Man of Steel $20.82M
