The movie starred Bob Hoskins as a detective who aids a cartoon rabbit, Roger, accused of murder. Not only did the film popularize Roger Rabbit and his wife, the voluptuous, animated human Jessica Rabbit, it also brought together dozens of classic cartoon characters. To date, it’s the only project in which Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny have shared screen time.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit made over $150 million at the domestic box office following its release on June 22, 1988.

Actor-comedian Charles Fleischer, who was the voice of Roger Rabbit, says he jumped at the chance to be a part of the film. Speaking with ABC News Radio, he recalled the moment. “I said jeez, do I really want to be in a movie produced by Steven Spielberg, directed by Bob Zemeckis with that Disney company, do I really want to do that? Or wouldn’t it be better just to [play] The Laughing Spoon in Poughkeepsie? Hmm, give me another nanosecond.”

To this day, Fleischer says, he is recognized in public for his role as the wacky rabbit. He says, “I have no problem busting out the voice, ‘cause, you know, it’s a privilege.”

Robert Zemeckis has hinted in recent years that a sequel to Who Framed Roger Rabbit may happen.
