San Francisco 49ers cornerback Tarell Brown has voided a $2 million escalator in his contract after choosing not to participate in the team’s offseason workout program. Brown was unaware of the clause, and fired his agent.

Brown says he only became aware of the clause after practice this past Thursday via Twitter. He was due to make $2.925 million in salary for the 2013 season. That number now shrinks to $925,000.

Brown For usually trains on his own during the offseason and says he would have been there had he been aware of the clause.

“No one wants to leave money on the table,” Brown said. “If I would have known the clauses in my contract — that’s what agent get paid to do, to orchestrate the contract and to let you know what you can can’t do as far as workouts and OTAs and things of that sort. That’s what he got paid to do. He didn’t do that, so in my opinion, you have to be let go.”

“We all are held accountable for our actions. This is part of the business,” he continued.

A fifth-round pick back in 2007, Brown has become a reliable starter for the 49ers since 2011 and has emmerged as arguably the team’s best cornerback as he recorded a career high 57 tackles in 2012.

He plans on speaking to 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh to see if some sort of compromise can be made regarding his lost money.
