Rodriguez has missed the entire 2013 season while recovering from hip surgery. He was finishing a rehab assignment for Triple-A Scranton and was expected to return to the Yankees’ lineup this week in Texas before feeling stiffness in his quad Saturday. After serving as a designated hitter for Scranton on Saturday, Rodriguez was sent to New York for an MRI, which revealed the injury.

“I am extremely disappointed with the results of the MRI,” Rodriguez said in a statement. “I’m hoping to be back as soon as possible and continue with my goal of coming back and helping the Yankees win a championship.”

A-Rod will now report to the Yankees’ training complex in Tampa for rest and treatment.

The Yankees have had 16 players on the DL this season.
