“We are happy to have Nathan under contract and anxious to see him at training camp,” said Avalanche executive vice president of hockey operations Joe Sakic in a statement. “His presence will bring additional speed and talent to our team, as well as a lot of excitement to our fans.”

According to the Denver Post, MacKinnon’s cap hit will be $3.775 million, the most a player can make in his first contract, although his base salary will be $925,000.

The 17-year-old center led the Halifax Mooseheads to their first Quebec Major Junior Hockey League title and first-ever Memorial Cup championship last season. MacKinnon was also named MVP of the Memorial Cup putting up a tournament high 13 points.

MacKinnon is expected to start the season in Colorado on a line with Jamie McGinn and and Steve Downie.
