(FOXBOROUGH, Mass.) — New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick spoke for the first time on Wednesday about the arrest of former tight end Aaron Hernandez on a murder charge.
“When I was out of the country, I learned about the ongoing criminal investigation that involved one of our players,” Belichick said. “I and other members of the organization were shocked and disappointed in what we had learned.”
The 23-year-old Hernandez was arrested last month on murder and weapons charges for allegedly killing his friend Odin Lloyd. Hernandez has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
“Overall I’m proud of the hundreds of players that have come through this program, but I am personally disappointed and hurt in a situation like this,” Belichick said.
