Bradley Manning Case: Judge Won’t Dismiss Most Serious Charge

Mark Wilson/Getty Images(FORT MEADE, Md.) — As Army Private First Class Bradley Manning’s court martial winds down, the judge presiding in the case ruled Thursday against a defense motion to dismiss the most serious charge against him: aiding the enemy — the charge that could see him sentenced to life in prison if convicted.
In February, Manning pleaded guilty 10 lesser charges that carried a 20-year prison sentence.
Prosecutors say that the former Army intelligence analyst “knowingly gave intelligence to the enemy” when he leaked 700,000 U.S. government documents to WikiLeaks.
Closing arguments could begin as early as Friday. The defense rested its case earlier last week.
Once the judge in the case decides the verdict, the trial will move into a sentencing phase.
