Sabathia has been one of the only high-priced players for the New York Yankees to stay healthy this season. But he has under-performed by his standards in 2013 and he’ll be the first to admit it.

“I suck. I wish I had an excuse or something,” Sabathia said. “It sucks. It’s embarrassing. But you have to try to work through it, figure something out and start trying to help this team instead of hurting it.”

On Sunday against the Boston Red Sox, Sabathia gave up seven earned runs in just five innings of work. As a result, Sabathia now sits at 9-8 with a 4.37 ERA. Hardly the type of production you expect see get from a player who’s making over $24 million this season.

The last time Sabathia had an ERA as high as it is now over a full season was in 2002, which was just his second year in Major League Baseball. Even more alarming for Sabathia and the Yankees is that he’s already given up a career high 23 home runs this season. He had previously set his career high of 22 home runs just last season.
